The Ipod docks were very impressive. I told him that as impressive as they were I wasn't in the market for one. He then gave me this whole routine about how if I act now and sign up for a Best Buy credit card I can save 20%. He then told me that if I did that they can work out a payment plan where I would be making low payments over a period of a few months. He said to me that if I acted now I would have it instantly.
Phones are a piece of technology everyone needs and uses. The fact is phones are now bringing games to a large part of the population that would never touch a console ever. In an instant, for ninety nine cents a consumer can have a game. Not just a game but a lasting entertainment experience.
Some of you might say that paying so much is insane. Think about how much money you are spending on booster packs. You might spend four dollars until you get the card you want and you might even spend one hundred dollars. Point is buying the card now for that set price is a quick and easy way of getting what you want instead of making what could be a costly and time consuming investment.
The point I am trying to make is that times are changing. As a designer we should not look at social games as something to belittle. Great design is something that can be carried over from game to game. I have spoken with many up and coming game designers and most of them have the misconception that social games are lesser games. That is like saying board games aren't games. We have to keep an open mind on our ever evolving industry. As far as cellphones replacing consoles, I feel consoles are still going to be around for a little bit longer. I would think people wondered the same thing once arcades started to dwindle. Just remember this, you can't make someone buy something they don't want.
